The invention discloses an aerated concrete block and a preparation method thereof. The aerated concrete block is prepared by mixing, by mass parts, 65-70 parts of river sand, 12-15 parts of cement, 12-15 parts of quicklime, 2-4 parts of anhydrite, 0.04-0.08 part of aluminum powder, 0.01-0.02 part of sodium hydroxide, 0.01-003 part of sodium carbonate and 80-110 parts of clear water, and the total mass parts are 200 parts. The aerated concrete block is low in production cost. The prepared concrete block is good in compressive strength, the compressive strength is as high as 6.2 MPa, and the shrinkage value is small and is 0.40 below mm/m.
