The invention relates to a side slope ecological restoration system and method. The system comprises a impounding reservoir, a waste slag layer, slope protection grids and a growth matrix layer, wherein the impounding reservoir is dug at the top of the side slope; the waste slag layer, the slope protection grids and the growth matrix layer are laid on the slope surface of the side slope in sequence; the growth matrix layer is formed by laying a plurality of jute bags which are filled with a plant growth mixed matrix; soil fills in seams between the adjacent jute bags; a fixed irrigation pipe net covers the growth matrix layer; a water suction pump is disposed in the impounding reservoir; a water discharging pipe is connected with a water outlet of the water suction pump; and the other endof the water discharging pipe communicates with a water inlet of the upper portion of the fixed irrigation pipe net. The side slope ecological restoration system and method have the effects that waterand soil loss, slope surface landslide and the like are prevented and have the function of irrigating vegetation on the side slope. Side slope anchoring and ecological system restoration are combined, the top of the side slope can serve as a road for use, and the service life of the whole side slope is effectively prolonged.
