A monitoring system including a ground engaging wear member is disclosed. The ground engaging wear member is secured to an earth working apparatus and includes: an outer surface defined by a top surface, a bottom surface, and side surfaces; a mounting cavity for being mounted on the digging edge of a bucket; an opening that opens in one of the top surface, the bottom surface, or the side surfacesof the outer surface; and an attachment member fixed in the opening such that the attachment member can be removed through the opening from an outside of the outer surface. The attachment member has amonitoring device comprising an electronic device for monitoring at least one characteristic of the wear member and a communication device for wirelessly transmitting data collected by the electronicdevice; the monitoring system also includes at least one remote device for wirelessly receiving the data and at least one programmable logic device for processing the data to provide information related to the at least one characteristic of the wear member.
