The invention discloses a method for improving the anti-overturning safety of an existing balance weight type retaining wall based on a side width structure, which is characterized in that the side width structure is adopted to reinforce the existing balance weight type retaining wall, wherein the parameter design of the side width structure comprises the steps of introducing an original design anti-overturning evaluation coefficient, an actual anti-overturning evaluation coefficient and a target anti-overturning evaluation coefficient, and calculating parameters of the side width structure ina reinforced moment model. Compared with the prior art, the brand-new calculation design method considering the bearing effect of the existing balance weight type retaining wall is provided for the existing balance weight type retaining wall adopting the side width structure, dismantling and reconstruction of the existing retaining wall are avoided, the size of the side width type retaining wallis optimized, and therefore on the premise that safety is guaranteed, engineering investment is reduced, and economical efficiency is improved.
