The invention relates to the field of preparation of aluminum oxide powder, and discloses submicron spherical aluminum oxide as well as a preparation method and an application thereof. The method comprises the following steps: (1) mixing industrial aluminum hydroxide, a surfactant and water to prepare a first slurry, carrying out a hydrothermal reaction, and carrying out suction filtration on theobtained product to obtain a filter cake; (2) carrying out acid washing and suction filtration on the filter cake to obtain an aluminum hydroxide filter cake; and (3) preparing second slurry from thealuminum hydroxide filter cake and water, and carrying out spray drying, roasting and grinding treatment to obtain the spherical alpha-Al2O3 with high purity and high sphericity degree.
