The invention relates to the technical field of solid waste resource utilization in the coal chemical industry and the field of building materials, in particular to a method for preparing ceramsite and the ceramsite prepared by the method. The method comprises the following steps: (1) mixing coal gasification slag, gasification filter cake and water treatment softened sludge, and carrying out granulation; (2) carrying outsecond drying on the solid product obtained in the step (1) optionally, and then roasting the mixture to obtain ceramsite, wherein based on the total amount of the coal gasification slag, the gasification filter cake and the water treatment softening sludge, the use amount of the coal gasification slag is 34-54 wt%, the use amount of the gasification filter cake is 36-64 wt%, and the use amount of the water treatment softening sludge is 2-10 wt%. The ceramsite has good apparent density, cylinder compressive strength and water absorption, the usage amount of gasified ash can be increased, and the purpose of fully utilizing waste is achieved.
