The invention discloses a gypsum-based self-leveling agent and a preparation method thereof. The gypsum-based self-leveling agent comprises the following substances in parts by mass: 45-55% of gypsum;5%-7% of cement; 5%-7% of filler; 30%-40% of sand; 0.5%-0.6% of rubber powder; 0.2%-0.3% of a water reducing agent; and 0.1%-0.2% of a defoaming agent. Gypsum is used as a cementing material, and thegypsum is used for providing hardness and strength required by ground paving engineering; the sand is aggregate, so that the product has high bending resistance and compression resistance; and a heavy calcium carbonate is used as a filler, so that the slurry consistency of the product is proper, bleeding is prevented, the method is simple and easy to implement, and the obtained self-leveling agent has the advantages of high constructability, bending resistance, compression resistance, bonding strength, cracking resistance and strength speed, and has wide application prospects.
