The external wall thermal insulation material comprises the following components in parts by mass: 55-75 parts of an inorganic cementing material; 10-30 parts of a lightweight aggregate; 0.2-0.5 part of cellulose; 0.5-1 part of rubber powder; 3-5 parts of bentonite; 1-3 parts of a foaming agent;0.5-1 part of a waterproof agent; 0.05-0.1 part of a thixotropic agent; 2-5 parts of a coagulant; 0.1-0.5 part of a fiber; and 65-75 parts of water. The preparation method comprises the following steps: S1, crushing a foaming agent until the mesh number is greater than or equal to 100; and S2, weighing the foaming agent powder obtained in the step S1 according to the formula ratio, respectively weighing the inorganic cementing material, the lightweight aggregate, the cellulose, the rubber powder, the bentonite, the foaming agent, the waterproof agent, the thixotropic agent, the coagulant and the fiber, sequentially adding the above into a powder stirrer according to the formula ratio, and carrying out uniformly stirring. The preparation method has the advantages that the method for preparing the external wall thermal insulation material is simple and easy to implement, the thermal insulation material has the characteristics of uniform foaming, low density, high strength, low heat conductivity coefficient and low water absorption, so that the subsequent construction operation is simple and convenient, and the manpower can be greatly saved.
