The invention relates to the technical field of building blocks, in particular to a building block for an ecological retaining wall. Two sides of a building block body are respectively connected with a first wing plate and a second wing plate; the upper surface and the lower surface of the first wing plate are vertically and fixedly connected with an upper column body and a lower column body respectively; the upper surface of the second wing plate is provided with a connecting hole; a contour line of the connecting hole is formed by connecting a plurality of arcs with centers of circle on a center line of the connecting hole; a connecting block with a T-shaped horizontal section is fixedly connected to the back face of the building block body; a flow guide groove is formed between the middle of the back face of the connecting block and the bottom end of the front face of the building block body; a vegetation hole is formed in the position, close to the front face, on the upper surface of the building block body; and a second through hole is formed between the bottom surface of the vegetation hole and the flow guide groove. The durability and the overall stability of connection between building blocks are enhanced, the soil retaining capacity is improved, and the building blocks can adapt to different retaining terrains conveniently; and accumulated water in a back soil layer can be dredged conveniently, and air can be provided for root systems of plants in the vegetation hole.
