The invention discloses gypsum-based thermal insulation mortar and a preparation method thereof, and relates to the technical field of thermal insulation mortar. The gypsum-based thermal insulation mortar is prepared from the following raw material components in parts by weight: 60 to 70 parts of beta-semi-hydrated phosphogypsum powder, 8 to 12 parts of expanded and vitrified small balls, 10 to 20 parts of fly ash, 0.5 to 1 part of methyl cellulose, 0.8 to 1.2 parts of super plasticizer, 1 to 2 parts of gypsum retarder, 1.5 to 2.5 parts of lubricant, 1.5 to 2.5 parts of silane water repellent, 0.5 to 1 part of anti-crack fiber, 4 to 6 parts of redispersible latex powder and 1.5 to 2.5 parts of vegetable gelatin powder. The gypsum-based thermal insulation mortar is light in weight, good in thermal insulation performance, low in heat conductivity coefficient and grade-A in fireproof grade.
