The retarding type polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent is prepared from the following raw materials in percentage by weight: 1 to 2 percent of maltodextrin, 0.2 to 0.5 percent of methyl cellulose, 1 to 4 percent of sodium gluconate, 0.5 to 2 percent of honey, 0.5 to 2 percent of sucrose, 0.5 to 1 percent of air entraining agent, 0.1 to 1 percent of defoaming agent and 90.2 to 93.5 percent of polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent mother liquor. The retarding agent has the advantage that the retarding effect of the polycarboxylate superplasticizer is enhanced.
