Pre-sintered and sintered zirconia dental ceramic materials are provided. The material has a gradient of yttrium oxide content. The material may have a gradient of one or more physical/mechanical properties and/or one or more optical properties. The material may be prepared by mixing at least two zirconia ceramic powders having different yttrium oxide contents. The sintered zirconia dental ceramic material may be in the form of a dental article.
