The invention discloses a system and method for pumped storage through combination of a subsidence area and a coal mine underground space, and the system comprises an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir disposed below the upper reservoir, a plant chamber for pumped storage, a diversion tunnel, a tailrace tunnel, a surge chamber, a trash rack for filtering sundries, and a ventilation and transportation system. The system can be matched with a new energy power system, multiple services such as peak and valley filling, frequency modulation, phase modulation and emergency accident standby are provided for a power grid, development of new energy is promoted, the coal mine ground subsidence area and the underground space and the natural terrain difference between the coal mine ground subsidence area and the underground space can be effectively utilized, and the mine resource development utilization rate is increased; a transformation, escape and sustainable development approach is provided for closing a mine, original roads, sites, water supply, drainage, power supply, ventilation, detection and other facilities and equipment in coal mine laneway engineering and a mining area can be effectively utilized, and the engineering cost and land acquisition cost are reduced.
