The invention discloses a hinge assembly (10) for two chain links (100, 101, 102) of a ballast removal chain (8). A first chain link (101) of the two chain links (101, 102) comprises a single-piece member (101 ') having two flanges (110a, 110b), the two flanges (110a, 110b) being parallel to each other and each having a through-hole (111), a second chain link (102) of the two chain links comprises a single-piece member (102') comprising a guide flange (120) inserted between the two parallel flanges (110a, 110b) of the first chain link (101), the guide flange (120) being penetrated by a guide hole (112), the hinge assembly (10) further comprises a hinge pin (160), and the hinge pin (160) is inserted into the guide hole (112) and the through hole (111) in the two parallel flanges (110a and 110b). The guide hole (112) is reinforced by a bushing (113) which is designed to receive the hinge pin (160) and to rotationally guide the hinge pin (160) relative to the integral component (102 ') of the second link (102). The through-hole (111) in one of the two parallel flanges (110b) comprises a flat portion (105) cooperating with the flat portion (161) of the hinge pin (160) to prevent rotation of the hinge pin (160) relative to the one-piece member (101 ') of the first link (101).
