The invention relates to a connecting rail or bar for clamping into an opening of a window fitting, said U-shaped bar comprising, in cross-section, a central longitudinal plane and, on either side thereof, two legs or longitudinal sides, wherein the lever is provided with a clamping system for locking the lever in a hardware recess of the window profile, and wherein the lever is further provided with a coupling region in the region of both ends of the lever for coupling the window hardware, wherein at least one longitudinal side of the lever is provided with a plurality of lateral clamping elements or snap elements spaced apart from one another for clamping the lever in the hardware recess, the snap elements being arc-shaped when viewed from above, the arc being elastically displaceable for this purpose, wherein the end of the arcuate catch is connected to the at least one longitudinal side, and wherein the lever has a height or thickness such that the upper plane in the caught state in the hardware recess does not protrude very or only slightly from the hardware recess. The invention also relates to a method for clamping and locking such a lever.
