The invention provides a gabion retaining wall and a construction method of the gabion retaining wall. The gabion retaining wall comprises a plurality of gabions, a plurality of stand columns and a plurality of anchor cables, and the gabions are stacked on a roadbed or a side slope; the stand column is inserted into the gabion, and the bottom end of the stand column is used for being inserted into the roadbed or the side slope; one end of the anchor cable is connected with the stand column, the other end of the anchor cable is used for being anchored to a soil body, and the soil body is located behind the retaining wall. According to the gabion retaining wall, the stand column is inserted into the gabion, the stability and reliability of the gabion are enhanced, the stand column is connected with the soil body through the anchor cable, the stability of the stand column is further enhanced, and the anchor cable and stand column structure serves as an auxiliary stress system of the gravity type gabion retaining wall; reasonable application of the gravity type gabion retaining wall in engineering scenes with high retaining walls and without large-scale excavation conditions is achieved.
