The invention discloses a road roller steering system and a control method thereof.The road roller steering system comprises a hydraulic steering system and a steering gear box which are installed between a front frame and a rear frame which are hinged to each other, and the steering gear box controls the relative swing angle of the front frame and the rear frame through the hydraulic steering system; the hydraulic steering system comprises a steering oil cylinder and an electric control steering proportional valve, and the electric control steering proportional valve controls the steering oil cylinder to stretch out and draw back. A piston rod expansion amount sensor is arranged on the steering oil cylinder, a steering angle sensor is arranged on the steering gear box, a controller is arranged between the hydraulic steering system and the steering gear box, and the controller controls the opening degree of the electric control steering proportional valve according to signals of the steering angle sensor and the piston rod expansion amount sensor. The method has the beneficial effects that by controlling the steering angle of the whole machine and the rotation angle of the steering wheel to be kept synchronous, the response speed of a steering system is increased, the obstacle avoidance capacity of the whole machine is improved, and meanwhile the operation intensity of an operator can be reduced. And by arranging the emergency steering system, the reliability of the steering system is improved.
