The preparation method comprises the following steps: step 1, drying the raw materials; step 2, preparing materials; step 3, stirring; step 4, aging; step 5, granulating; step 6, preheating; step 7, roasting; step 8, cooling; the low-ignition-loss powdery clay, a proper amount of cavings powder and water are metered and then fed into a stirring machine to be mixed and extruded, then the mixture is fed into a granulator to be granulated and formed, and the ceramsite is obtained through firing at the temperature of 1175 DEG C, the heating rate of 10 DEG C/min and the constant temperature time of 10 min, so that the strength of the ceramsite obtained through firing is improved, and the ceramsite has the advantages of being good in expansion performance and low in density; and compared with other chemical substances or coal gangue, the method has the characteristics of low cost and good improved economic benefit.
