The invention discloses gypsum-based self-leveling mortar and a preparation method thereof. The mortar is prepared from the following raw material components in parts by mass: 550 to 700 parts of gypsum, 20 to 40 parts of cement, 250 to 400 parts of aggregate, 10 to 30 parts of filler, 1 to 2 parts of water reducing agent, 0.3 to 1.2 parts of retarder, 0.5 to 0.8 part of cellulose ether, 0.6 to 0.8 part of defoaming agent, 0.02 to 0.05 part of stabilizer, 0 to 0.5 part of exciting agent and 0.5 to 1.5 parts of polyvinyl alcohol. The mass ratio of water to materials of the mortar is 0.27-0.33, and the gypsum-based self-leveling mortar prepared according to the proportion is good in flowability and free of bleeding and sedimentation phenomena on the premise that the operable time is enough. Along with the increase of water consumption, the fluidity of the mortar is not greatly increased, and after the mortar is hardened, the surface of the mortar is smooth and flat, high in hardness, good in wear resistance and free of powder falling.
