The invention discloses an external damping device for a sling of a suspension bridge, and relates to the technical field of damping vibration attenuation devices. The dowel bar assembly comprises a lower dowel bar assembly, one end of the lower dowel bar assembly is used for being connected with the bottom of the sling, the other end of the lower dowel bar assembly is rotationally connected with the middle of the dowel lever, and the dowel lever is divided into a resisting arm and a power arm; one end of the upper dowel bar assembly is used for being connected with the sling, and the other end of the upper dowel bar assembly is rotationally connected with the end of the resisting arm; the damping structure is arranged at the end of the power arm and used for being fixed to the main beam. When the device is used, the characteristic that the displacement of the bottom of the sling is small and almost zero is utilized, the middle rotating point of the force transmission lever serves as a fulcrum and is divided into a resisting arm and a power arm, the other end of the upper force transmission rod assembly is rotationally connected with the end of the resisting arm, the damping structure is connected with the end of the power arm, and vibration is amplified and transmitted to the damping structure; the method has the characteristics of no need of arranging a special vertical support foundation and convenience in installation.
