The invention relates to a method for cleaning a ballast bed (4) of a track (2) by means of an on-rail machine (8, 18, 21), in which ballast (1) lying below a track panel (5) is removed by means of a ballast removal device (10) by means of a cleaning machine (8), and subsequently cleaned and/or new ballast (1) is laid on the track (2) in a plurality of times with respect to a working direction (12) by means of a ballast laying device (11) and a ballast train (15), the ballast bed (4) is laid by means of a ballast laying device (11) and a ballast train (15), and the laid ballast (1) is compacted by means of a tamping machine (18) and a stabilizing machine (21), all layers of new and/or cleaned ballast (1) being laid by means of the ballast laying device (11) and the ballast train (15) before a first tamping operation, and the ballast bed (4) being compacted in different depth layers by means of a deep tamping unit (22) during the first tamping operation, in a first tamping operation, the track (2) is then stabilized by the stabilizing machine (21), subsequently in a second tamping operation, the track panel (5) is immediately tamped in only one depth layer by the same or another tamping machine (18), and after the second tamping operation, the track (2) is stabilized by the same or another stabilizing machine (21).
