An electrically conductive and swellable backfill material for grounding applications comprising an electrically conductive material selected from graphite, coke powder, and combinations thereof, a polyacrylamide powder, a binder comprising cement, and optionally a salt selected from magnesium sulfate, sodium sulfate, and combinations thereof. This unique backfill material allows it to be used in low humidity areas because it has a low resistivity, a high water absorption and a non-leached behavior.
