The invention provides hexagonal boron nitride ceramic and a preparation method thereof, the hexagonal boron nitride ceramic comprises a main phase and a dispersed phase, the main phase comprises h-BN, and the dispersed phase comprises Al2Y4O9; the apparent porosity of the hexagonal boron nitride ceramic is less than or equal to 5%, and the density is greater than or equal to 90%; according to the preparation method, h-BN and a sintering aid are mixed and sintered, the high-density hexagonal boron nitride ceramic containing specific crystalline phase components is obtained, and the obtained hexagonal boron nitride ceramic has the elastic modulus larger than or equal to 20.0 GPa and the bending strength larger than or equal to 100 MPa; the preparation method is simple in process, is beneficial to preparation of large-size boron nitride ceramic components, has relatively low sintering temperature, and is beneficial to cost reduction and promotion of large-scale industrial production.
