The invention relates to the field of refractory fibers, in particular to a refractory fiber and a preparation method thereof.The preparation method comprises the following steps that S1, bauxite, kaolin and vermiculite are taken and ground into powder; s2, adding the vermiculite powder into a sodium chloride solution, heating, slowly dropwise adding tetramethylammonium bromide and a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide solution into the sodium chloride solution in sequence through a liquid adding device, and carrying out ball milling to obtain refined vermiculite powder; s3, adding water into the bauxite powder, adjusting the pH value to 9-10, carrying out ultrasonic treatment, and carrying out ball milling to obtain refined bauxite powder; s5, adding the refined vermiculite powder, the refined bauxite powder and the refined kaolin powder into a diluent, carrying out ultrasonic treatment, adding aluminum oxide whiskers, an adsorbent, a binding agent and silica sol, and carrying out heating and heat preservation; s6, spinning is carried out at the temperature of 1550-1600 DEG C, and the refractory fiber is obtained.
