The invention relates to a method for automatically setting a variable boom position (MS) of an adjustable distributing boom (3) of a construction material and/or slurry pump system (4), at least one identical tip position (SPO) of a boom tip (3S) of the distributing boom (3) being accessible by means of different boom positions (MS, MS), the method comprises the following steps: ascertaining and setting the boom position (MS) on the basis of a predefined variable (VG) that determines the tip position (SPO) and by means of an optimization criterion (OK), the optimization criterion (OK) being a minimized tilting moment (KM) of the distributing boom (3) relative to a support system (7) of the building material and/or slurry pump system (4), the tilting moment being a minimum tilting moment (KM) of the distributing boom (3) relative to the support system (7) of the building material and/or slurry pump system (4), and the tilting moment being a minimum tilting moment (KM) of the distributing boom (3) relative to the support system (7) of the building material and/or slurry pump system (4). The tilting moment (KM) depends on the boom position (MS).
