The invention discloses a fish passing method of a ship lift. The method comprises the following steps that 1, fishes are trapped to a lower lock head; 2, a lower lock head flap gate and a ship reception chamber downstream flap gate are opened; thirdly, the dragging fish-driving grating is moved to the downstream side of the ship reception chamber; 4, the fishes are driven into the ship reception chamber; 5, the fishes are driven into the fish box section of the ship reception chamber; sixthly, a downstream flap gate of the ship reception chamber is closed; 7, the ship reception chamber is lifted to the upstream ship exit elevation; eighthly, the lock head flap gate and the ship reception chamber upstream flap gate are opened; 9, the fishes are driven to the upstream approach channel; 10, the fishes are driven to the upstream reservoir area; eleventhly, the ship is driven out of the ship chamber. The device has the advantages of directionally trapping and driving fishes into the ship lift chamber of the ship lift, out of the ship lift chamber and out of an upstream approach channel. The invention further discloses the fish passing type ship lift.
