The invention relates to the field of overhead operation area safety protection, in particular to an overhead operation area protection system and method.The overhead operation area protection system comprises a supporting assembly which comprises a plurality of vertical rods and is connected to an operation foundation through a foundation base, and a reset deflection structure and a locking structure are arranged on the foundation base; the tensioning assembly comprises a vertical frame used for being connected with the protection cable and a gravity block connected with the protection cable and tensioned. The pole reversing assembly comprises a deflection guide assembly used for pulling the protection cable away from the vertical pole and pushing down the vertical pole, and a reset guide assembly used for pulling the protection cable back to the vertical pole and promoting the vertical pole to reset and stand. The supporting assembly is arranged to form a protection face, safety protection is carried out on a free-air operation area, and the safety of free-air operation of personnel is improved; and meanwhile, the hoisting equipment can synchronously carry out rod reversing operation in the advancing process, the situation that passing of the hoisting equipment is affected by existence of the protection system is avoided, the protection system allows the hoisting equipment to advance in a reciprocating mode, and use is more flexible and convenient.
