The invention relates to the technical field of ceramsite preparation, and particularly provides environment-friendly ceramsite and a preparation method thereof. The environment-friendly ceramsite is prepared from the following raw material components in parts by mass: 650 to 1000 parts of fly ash, 100 to 400 parts of bentonite, 20 to 60 parts of stearic acid and 10 to 50 parts of cellulose nanocrystals. Compared with the prior art, the waste resource fly ash is adopted as the main raw material, the bentonite, the stearic acid and the cellulose nanocrystals are added, the qualified ceramsite is manufactured through a certain production process, effective recycling of resources is achieved, pollution is reduced, and meanwhile the ecological environment is protected.
