The invention relates to a magnesian dry material for a tundish and a preparation method thereof. The magnesian dry material comprises the following raw materials: 5-10 parts of 0-1mm fused magnesite; 5-10 parts of fused magnesite of 1-3 mm; 6 to 15 parts of 200-mesh fused magnesite; 10 to 20 parts of 1 to 3 mm sintered magnesia; 15 to 30 parts of 3 to 5 mm sintered magnesia; 2 to 20 parts of 0 to 1mm quartz sand; 3-20 parts of 1-3mm quartz sand; 2-15 parts of a binding agent; and 1 to 15 parts of Al2O3 powder. The method has the advantages that the fused magnesite and the sintered magnesite are selected to be mixed to facilitate gap filling between the magnesite, the quartz sand reacts with MgO at a high temperature to generate expansion, permeation of the steel slag to the refractory material can be resisted, meanwhile, few low-melting-point phases are generated in the reaction process, and the steel slag corrosion resistance of the refractory material is improved.
