The present invention relates to a method for producing an aggregate comprising the steps of providing a starting product comprising at least 20 mass% magnesium silicate hydrate, comminuting to a fineness corresponding to a BET surface area of 0.1 m2/g or less, homogenizing the starting product, and at least partially dehydrating the starting product to remove bound water by heat treatment in a heat treatment device, contacting the dehydrated starting product with CO2 wherein CO2 reacts with the dehydrated magnesium silicate hydrate and CO2 is bound in the resulting magnesium carbonate hydrate and/or magnesium carbonate, and pressing and compacting the dehydrated starting product into a solid before or after contacting with CO2 to produce the aggregate. The invention further relates to an aggregate.
