The invention discloses a preparation method of aerogel particles for a thermal insulation material, which comprises the following steps: mixing raw materials: uniformly mixing a silicon source, a modifier, an alcohol reagent and water to form a mixed solution A; adding a catalyst: adding the catalyst into the mixed solution A to form a mixed solution B; gelling: gelling the mixed solution B; the gel temperature is 20-35 DEG C, and the gel humidity is 30-60% RH; performing granulation: when the hardness value of the gel is 20-70F, performing granulation; aging: adding the granulated gel particles into an alcohol aging solution for aging; and drying: carrying out supercritical drying on the aged gel particles to form aerogel particles. According to the method, the granulation time is determined by monitoring the granulation hardness, granulation is performed under the appropriate hardness, and the gel is not excessively crushed or is not crushed insufficiently in the granulation process; meanwhile, the temperature and humidity of the gel are regulated and controlled, so that the gel keeps proper elasticity, more uniform aerogel particles can be obtained, and the yield of the particles with the particle size of 1-4 mm can be increased.
