The present invention relates to a method of casting a preform part for reactive bonding, the method comprising applying a mold release layer on the inner surface of a mold and on the surface of a mandrel. An assembled mold is formed from the mold and the mandrel, and a preform cake is formed by pouring a slurry into the mold cavity and settling it. Thermal removal of the release layer facilitates removal of the mandrel and removal of the preform cake after pyrolysis.
