The invention discloses a preparation method of cellulose ether for gypsum mortar, which is characterized by comprising the following steps: S1, putting refined cotton powder into a reaction kettle, replacing air in the reaction kettle, protecting with inert gas, and controlling the pressure in the kettle; s2, liquid caustic soda with the concentration of 32-50% is added, a reaction is conducted for 5-45 min, and the reaction temperature is controlled to be 20-45 DEG C; s3, adding a first-stage etherifying agent, controlling the pressure in the kettle to be 0.15-0.3 MPa, controlling the temperature to be 30-50 DEG C, and reacting for 40-90 minutes; s4, adding a second-stage etherifying agent, a low-boiling-point ether substance and a low-carbon alcohol substance; s5, the reaction pressure is increased to 1.7-2.2 Mpa, and a reaction is carried out under the pressure; s6, recycling; and S7, post-processing. The product prepared by the invention has the advantages of gypsum universality, reduction of gypsum layering and cracking, prolongation of gypsum opening time, reduction of water consumption and coagulation time difference among gypsum batches, few bubbles and fast thickening.
