The invention provides an aerated concrete block and a preparation method thereof. The aerated concrete block is prepared from the following raw materials in percentage by weight: 58 to 74 percent of fly ash aluminum extraction residues, 2 to 3 percent of gypsum, 7 to 14 percent of cement, 16 to 29 percent of quick lime and 0.05 to 0.08 percent of aluminum powder paste. The characteristics of the fly ash aluminum extraction residues are fully utilized, and the fly ash aluminum extraction residues are cooperated with other raw material components with specific contents, so that the obtained aerated concrete block is high in compressive strength, small in dry density, low in cost, excellent in comprehensive performance and suitable for wide popularization and utilization.
