The invention provides an automatic pool cleaning device and a control method thereof. The automatic pool cleaning device comprises an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The control method comprises the following steps: controlling the automatic pool cleaning device to move downwards along the wall of the pool; the inertial measurement unit IMU measures acceleration information of the automatic pool cleaning device in real time; based on the acceleration information, whether the automatic pool cleaning device makes contact with the pool bottom of the pool or not is judged. According to the method, whether the pool cleaning device touches the bottom or not can be timely and accurately judged based on the inertial measurement unit on the pool cleaning device, and a guarantee is provided for subsequently controlling the automatic pool cleaning device to go down the wall in time.
