The invention relates to a railing element (10.1) for safeguarding working or standing surfaces, comprising at least one railing strut (12.1) and comprising coupling elements (14.1) disposed at a first end (16.1.1) of the railing strut (12.1) and coupling elements (1.41) disposed at a second end (16.1.2) of the railing strut (12.1), the coupling elements being provided for detachably fastening the railing element (10.1) to and between two spaced scaffolding posts (15.1). The first coupling element (14.1) associated with the first end (16.1.1) of the railing strut (12.1) and/or the second coupling element (14.1) associated with the second end (16.1.2) of the railing strut (12.1) and/or the railing strut has at least one elongate guide (23.1), to which an associated connecting means (20.1) is coupled. The invention also relates to scaffolding (11.1) having a railing element (10.1) according to the invention and to a method for assembling a railing element (10.1) according to the invention.
