The method involves detaching a longitudinal conveyor (17) from a running gear (12) of a feeding appliance, and attaching the longitudinal conveyor during commencement of operation. The handling of the longitudinal conveyor is performed by a lifting device, so that the longitudinal conveyor is automatically hooked onto the running gear by maneuvering performed by the lifting device. The longitudinal conveyor is secured in positively locking fashion in the hooked-in state on the running gear. A coupling element (20) is provided in the longitudinal conveyor. An independent claim is also included for a feeding appliance with a running gear.
