The invention relates to a method for operating a pump unit, particularly for a lifting system (1), for delivering a liquid by means of a pressure line (5) to a collecting line (6), in which method the pump unit (4, 7) automatically adjusts a setpoint volume flow (QSOLL) specified for the pump unit from a plurality of specific setpoint volume flows on the basis of a physical variable (I_ist) of the pump unit (4, 7), wherein the variable (I_ist) is the current (I_ist) consumed by the pump unit (4, 7) and/or a variable dependent thereon. A table is stored in the pump unit (4, 7), in which a value (I(n_i, Q)) of the variable is assigned to a plurality of discrete speeds (n_i) for each specifiable setpoint volume flow (Qsoll), said variable corresponding to an operating point (HIST, QIST) of the pump unit (4, 7) determined by the corresponding speed (n_i) and the corresponding setpoint volume flow (Qsoll). The volume flow (QIST) of the pump unit (4, 7) is adjusted on the basis of this table, by adjusting the speed in such a way that the variable (I_ist) substantially corresponds to a specific value (l(n_i, Qsoll)) assigned to the specified setpoint volume flow (QSOLL). The invention further relates to a pump unit and a lifting system which are each set up for implementation of the process.
