The invention relates to a covering composed of panels which can be mechanically connected to one another, comprising the following features: a) the panels (1, 2) have, at the sides (5, 10) thereof which are to be connected to one another, a corresponding profiling via which adjacent first and second panels (1, 2) can be locked with one another during assembly; b) locking is achieved by means of at least one tongue (6) which is held on the second panel (2) in a retaining groove (7) and which, during the joining movement, is partially pivotable behind a locking edge (29) of a locking groove (8) of the adjacent first panel (1); c) the tongue comprises a foot (15) held in the retaining groove (7) and, outside the retaining groove (7), a connecting portion (16) adjoining the foot (15) and a locking body (17) adjoining the connecting portion (16), for engagement with the adjacent panel (1, 2); d) the locking groove (8) has a relatively short upper groove flank (30) with the locking edge (29) on the mouth side and a relatively long lower groove flank (31) with a terminal supporting projection (22) which has a supporting face (23) which is inclined towards the locking groove (8) and on which the tongue (6) is supported during locking, with the result that, during assembly of the panels (1, 2), the locking body (17) is displaceable in the direction of the locking groove (8); e) the second panel (2) has a projecting pressing edge (26) which, during assembly of the panels (1, 2), is designed to press the locking body (17) on the one hand against the supporting face (23) and on the other hand to push it behind the locking edge (29) of the locking groove (8), wherein, in the locked position, and as viewed from an upper side (4) of the first panel (1), the pressing edge (26) is at a greater distance than the locking edge (29).
