The invention relates to a bucket wheel excavator (1) for continuously excavating material (5), in particular in open-cast mining, having a bucket wheel (2) which can be rotated about a central axis (M) and which has a plurality of shovels (3) arranged on the circumference, a bucket wheel width (SB), and a bucket wheel radial plane (Y) of symmetry; a conveyor device (4) with a main extension axis (F) for conveying the material (5) excavated using the bucket wheel (2) and with a belt system width (BB); a boom (6) which can be pivoted about a vertical pivot axis (X) and to which the bucket wheel (2) and the conveyor device (4) are attached; and a chute (7) for receiving the material (5) from the conveyor device (4), wherein the main extension axis (F) of the conveyor device (4) is skewed relative to the pivot axis (X) of the boom (6).
