The invention relates to a hydroelectric power plant (1) having a closing element (2) and an electric drive system (3), which is connected to the closing element, the drive system comprising a leadscrew (4), a transmission (5) and an electric motor (6), which define a drivetrain. The drive system further comprises an inverter (7) for feeding the electric motor (6), a control unit (8) for controlling the inverter (7) and a first mechanical brake (9), the first brake being arranged such that it can engage in the drivetrain so as to limit the rotational speed. The drive system comprises a second mechanical brake (11) and an activation device (10), wherein the second brake and the activation device are designed and arranged such that the second brake can be activated and deactivated with the aid of the activation device depending on the position of the closing element, and wherein the second brake can engage in the drivetrain to limit the rotational speed only when in the activated state.
