The invention relates to a machine (1) having a machine frame (2) supported on bogies (3), for machining the surface of a rail head (6) of a rail (5) by grinding using grinding tools (11) translated back and forth along a movement axis (7), which grinding tools are arranged on a grinding unit (8), which can be placed on the running surface of the rail head (6) by means of a vertical drive (13) and can be moved along the rail (5). The grinding unit (8) is coupled to the machine frame (2) of the machine (1) by means of a tow bar (15) and can always be oriented, in its movement axis (7), tangentially to the rail (5) by means of geometrically fixed conditions between a rotary journal distance 2*l or axle distance 2*l and an articulated-connection point (P3) of the tow bar (15). The invention further relates to a method, in which the machine (1) is moved through a track curve of arbitrary radius and, as a result of the mechanical coupling of the grinding unit (8) to the machine frame (2) by means of the tow bar (15), the grinding unit (8) is automatically oriented tangentially to the rail (5). An improvement in the quality of the grinding result and an accompanying increase in the grinding capacity and economy in comparison with the prior art, in particular in the case of track curves having small radii, are thus achieved. -
