The invention relates to devices and methods for detecting and locating moisture on moisture-carrying surfaces (110) or in moisture-carrying layers of buildings or building structures, in particular roofs. For this purpose, sensor cables or sensor strips (120) having electrically insulated conductors are used, wherein the electrical insulation of the conductors is moisture-resistant. Moisture is detected by comparing measurement values obtained by the conductors of different sensor cables or sensor strips (120). The comparison additionally makes it possible to associate the detected moisture with the surroundings of a sensor cable or sensor strip (120) and thus to locate the moisture. Using electrically insulated conductors having moisture-resistant insulation allows not only safe operation but also reliable operation. In many cases, comparing the measurement values makes it possible to avoid complex determination of reference values. Weather-related or electromagnetic interferences are less significant. Accordingly, using the proposed devices and methods allows moisture to be easily and reliably detected and located.
