PRODUCTION OF METAL CARBONATE SOIL AMENDMENT FROM METAL SLAG
Disclosed herein are methods of forming a soil amendment from metal slag, the method may comprise: increasing sodium in a bentonite clay by reacting bentonite clay and sodium salt to provide ion-exchanged sodium bentonite clay, wherein the bentonite clay comprises both sodium and calcium; feeding carbon dioxide through a reactor containing a mixture of the metal slag and the ion-exchanged sodium bentonite clay; wherein sodium ions of the ion exchanged bentonite clay transfers the carbon dioxide to a calcium silicate phase of the metal slag; reacting the ion-exchanged sodium bentonite clay with calcium silicate to consume the sodium carbonate of the ion-exchanged sodium bentonite clay and provide sodium silicate and calcium carbonate; reacting the sodium silicate to provide sodium carbonate and silicon dioxide; and combining the calcium carbonate and silicon dioxide to form the soil amendment, wherein the metal slag is a calcium slag silicate.
