A support 71 for use in an excavation, the support comprising an enclosure 73-1, 73-2 which is expandable on introduction of a fluid. The enclosure is comprises a plurality of self-contained cells of different sizes, each of which is impermeable to the fluid which is used to expand the enclosure. The cells of different sizes are expandable separately to one another. The support may expand in a first direction to a predetermined length before expanding in a second direction, and the support may include a pierce resistant layer. There may be a rigid platform attached to the enclosure for bridging the excavation. There is also an expandable support configured to take the weight of a vehicle weighing at least 750kg.
