A fall arrest system for individuals operating at height and a method of rendering safe a site above which an individual is operating at height comprises the provision of at least one self-inflating fall arrest unit 701 which, in a fully inflated state, is arranged at a ground location. The unit is configured, when in its fully inflated state, to be linked to at least one other fully inflated self-inflating fall arrest unit; for example by a fastener 702 such as a buckle clip. Each unit may include at least one battery-powered fan (602, Fig 6) and can be deflated and packed into a bag 201 after use (optionally remaining attached the bag when in its fully inflated state).
