A hinge comprising a housing 1 pivotally connected to a fixture by a coupling including a hinge pivot and a linkage 4, a piston (7 Fig 1) located in a bore in the housing and moveable between first (open) and second (closed) positions along an axis; the linkage comprising a guide 6 is mounted on the head of the piston, the guide 6 having an elongate channel 14 transverse to the piston axis, a contact member 15 16 movable within the channel and pivotally connected to a first member 21 pivotally connected to the housing and a second member 17 pivotally connected to the fixture spaced to the hinged pivot; the contact member moves along the channel between a first position and second position as the hinge is closed (Figs 3-6) and a force exerted by the contact member on the guide urges movement of the piston between the opened and closed positions. The contact may be a roller or toothed gear or pinion. Preferably the piston is a hydraulic and provides a damping force to damp movement between the closed and open positions. The guide channel may have various internal contours (Figs 10-12).
