Damped Hinge
A damping arrangement for a hinge comprising: a spindle 61 72 with a cam surface 63 74 and is mounted rotatable to a housing which includes a damping piston engaging the spindle and having a follower surface 70, the follower surface being urged by a spring into engagement with the cam surface of the spindle which moves the damping piston away from the spindle axis as the hinge is closed and wherein the follower surface is inclined relative to the a plane perpendicular to the damping piston axis so that the cam surface of the spindle contacts the follower surface at a decreasing distance parallel to the piston axis, as the hinge is closed. Preferably the follower surface has two asymmetric contact surfaces separated by an apex, one preferably being parallel to the spindle axis, the two surfaces are of different inclination or shape thus giving a variation in the damping applied. Alternatively the follower surface may be planar and decreases uniformly as the hinge moves from an open to closed position.
