A lid frame assembly for a manhole chamber which has one or more moveable struts 4 that support the lid 1 when the struts 4 are positioned so that their main axis is at an angle between vertical and horizontal, allowing the strut(s) to carry both lateral and vertical loads downwards and increase the load bearing capacity of the lid 1; when the lid is removed, the strut(s) can be moved to new positions to allow easy access into the manhole chamber. Preferably the struts are pivotally mounted to the lid frame 2 that sits on the chamber wall 7. The pivot bearing 5 controls the positions of the strut. When the struts are positioned to allow access into the chamber, the struts will also prevent the lid from being replaced (fig 2, 4).
