The invention relates to a locking mechanism for use with cupboards, cabinet doors and the like especially child-proof latches which include features which make them difficult for children to open. The mechanism limits movement of a movable first element 11 which may be attached to a drawer 33 with respect to a fixed second element (2 figure 2) and comprises a movable element attaching means 9 engaged to the movable first element 11, a fixed element attaching means (15figure 2) secured to the fixed second element (2 figure 2) a latching means 8, and a releasing means 9. The fixed element attaching means (15figure 2) comprises a horizontal cross rail (1figure 2) and is releasably lockable to the movable element attaching means 9 by the latching means 8 and releasable by the releasing means. The horizontal cross rail (1 figure 2) may be fixedly secured to a cupboard or drawer cabinet frame. The horizontal cross rail (1 figure 2) preferably comprises a "U" shaped portion. The horizontal cross rail may be fixedly secured to internal sides of the cupboard or drawer cabinet frame.
